Community Spotlight: Ambato, Ecuador
Ambato, Ecuador is an oasis, of sorts. Situated in the center of Ecuador, many people pass through this city to go to all parts of the country. The tiny, emerging Jewish community there is made up of twenty families, around 60 people, and, due to their location, they regularly receive Israeli tourists who visit the country and offer them lodging and kosher food.
Yaacov Muñoz, the president of the Jewish community in Ambato, is also the kashrut supervisor of the Jewish Community in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Because of this, the community in Ambato is able to get kosher meat, chicken and sausages, and, recently, chalav Yisrael milk and cheese were added as well.
Ambato has its own Torah scroll, as well as a scroll of Megillat Esther . In the next few days they are going to inaugurate the new headquarters for their synagogue.
